Health & Safety Legislation in Guernsey has evolved over the last century. In common with the United Kingdom the present legislative regime is very much “goal setting” with the main law and subsidiary Ordinance based on the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974.
In Guernsey the course which legislation takes to become law is unlike that of the United Kingdom due to our unique method of government A Project du Loi entitled The Health & Safety at Work etc. (Guernsey) Law was presented to the States of Deliberation and subsequent to their approval, was transmitted to the Privy Council for Royal assent.
Her Majesty having taken the advise of her Privy Council, approved and ratified the Project du Loi, with it coming into force on the 17th September 1979.
